Broadcaster Kim Kyung-hwa expressed disappointment that her daughter's school meal program was suspended and replaced with finished goods due to the sinkhole accident in Gangdong District, Seoul. In response, internet users showed a cold reaction, and ultimately, Kim Kyung-hwa deleted the post.
On the 28th, Kim Kyung-hwa shared a post on her personal social media saying, "This is the school meal my second child had at school. It is not a snack, but the school meal served during lunchtime," along with a photo. The shared photo showed finished goods such as bread, milk, and cup fruit contained on the meal tray.
That day, Kim Kyung-hwa noted, "Recently, there was a major accident in front of the school, resulting in unfortunate casualties, and because of safety issues in the area (dwellings have gas supplied), the school, being a large facility, cannot have gas supplied until safety is ensured," and added, "For that reason, the lunch and dinner school meals for the children have been suspended, and in their place, these finished goods are being provided."
She continued, "Since that day, I've been waking up early to prepare food for the kids and pack lunches as well. I understand that the gas is not available. While I comprehend the regulations and difficulties of communal meals, it's unavoidable that as a parent, I feel uncomfortable sending my child to school."
Kim Kyung-hwa stated, "The teachers are said to have warm meals delivered. The opinion of one teacher that students and teachers should be treated equally was dismissed," adding, "I also want to feed my child warm rice. It's not just about my own kid. I believe feeding warm rice is a parent's duty, so even if I try to understand this situation, I can't comprehend it."
She expressed, "This incident is very distressing. I am not someone who usually posts or mentions sensitive issues on social media. How hard could a few cherry tomatoes have been? Is one apple juice too expensive?" and questioned, "If there are rules against group orders (I also think these should apply at normal times), shouldn't they allow warm meals even if we have to order in groups?"
Additionally, Kim Kyung-hwa said, "Last year, when my child couldn't apply for dinner meals, I had a conversation with the nutritionist. At that time, the teacher said rules are rules and that we absolutely cannot provide additional meals, telling me not to call again. I thought, 'So this is what the school is like...' I remained silent with tears in my eyes," adding, "Yet, the children are still going hungry. It's so, so distressing."
After Kim Kyung-hwa posted, the public opinion from internet users is cold. Some users commented on her social media, "If you're that distressed, pack a lunch and send it. I don't understand why you're doing this," and, "The school has never allowed students to go hungry. They allowed additional lunchboxes, so it seems you can simply pack and send one yourself." Another user raised a question, saying, "If the school allows delivered food and someone gets food poisoning, how would they take responsibility?"
As the controversy grew, Kim Kyung-hwa deleted the post and has since removed all critical comments directed at her.
Meanwhile, on the 24th, a sinkhole approximately 20 meters in diameter occurred near Myungil-dong in Gangdong District, Seoul. As a result, one motorcycle rider was killed and one driver of a Carnival sustained injuries and was transported to a hospital.
