Netflix has confirmed the production of its new series "Scandal (working title)" and revealed the casting lineup of Son Ye-jin, Ji Chang-wook, and Nana.
"Scandal (working title)" is a Netflix series that tells the audacious and dangerous love wager between "Lady Jo," a woman with exceptional talent who is confined to living solely as a woman in the Joseon era, and "Jo Won," the best womanizer of Joseon, along with the story of a woman, "Hee-yeon," entangled in that wager.
"Scandal (working title)" is based on the 2003 film "Scandal: A Tale of a Love Between a Man and a Woman in Joseon." The film relocates Pierre Choderlos de Laclos' "Dangerous Liaisons," which depicts the decadent upper-class society of France just before the French Revolution, marked by conspiracy and ruin, to the Joseon era, where love and temptation were forbidden. It portrays the deadly temptations, betrayals, and a revenge-stained tale among the noble class with beauty and audacity, receiving critical acclaim.
Despite having a rating of Adults Only at the time, it recorded an impressive 3.52 million admissions, and the captivating narrative along with beautiful costumes and art contributed to its popularity. It raises curiosity about how the beloved original will evolve into a Netflix series. This "Scandal (working title)" is set against the backdrop of the Joseon era, where desire itself was taboo, and will depict the audacious love and tempting wagers of individuals challenging the strict Confucian order.
Son Ye-jin, who has showcased irreplaceable character delivery in dramas such as "Crash Landing on You," "Something in the Rain," and in films like "The Classic" and "Be With You," will play the role of "Lady Jo," a woman with exceptional talent and charm who faces the harsh realities of being unable to do anything simply due to being born a woman while engaging in a secret love wager. "Lady Jo" first proposes a wager of temptation to "Jo Won," demonstrating her qualities as an excellent strategist.
The role of "Jo Won," the top womanizer in Joseon who prefers pleasure and fun over social advancement, will be played by Ji Chang-wook, known for his performances that blend intensity and warmth through series such as Netflix's "The Sound of Magic," films like "Revolver," and dramas like "Gangnam Beauty," "Welcome to Samdalri," and "Worst Evil." "Jo Won" is an attractive man who does not believe in love and only enjoys romance, resorting to any means necessary to win the wager and capture "Lady Jo"'s heart.
Nana, who has shown a distinct presence across various genres, including the Netflix series "Masked Girl" and "Glitch," as well as films like "Confession" and "The Drug King," has taken on the role of "Hee-yeon," a woman who, after losing her husband and striving to maintain her fidelity, attempts to cut ties with "Jo Won" as he approaches her. "Hee-yeon" tries to keep herself in control but is shaken by inexplicable feelings toward "Jo Won," gradually revealing her complex inner struggles as she becomes increasingly drawn to him.
Meanwhile, the direction and screenplay of "Scandal (working title)" are handled by Jeong Ji-woo, a prominent director in Korean cinema known for films like "Music Album of Yoo-yeol" and "Happy End," as well as for being his first series project, Netflix's "Somebody." Director Jeong Ji-woo, who has illuminated nuanced emotional lines and intricate psychology and dangerous relationships among characters while maximizing the charms of actors in every project, is expected to present "Scandal (working title)." Additionally, writer Lee Seung-young, known for "The Art of Negotiation," and writer Ahn Hae-song, who adapted "Somebody," will participate in the screenplay, while Movie Rock, which has produced various genres including films like "Pilot," "Youth Record," "Chef's Diary," and "Witness," will add reliability to the project.
With the confirmation of production, the unique chemistry presented by Son Ye-jin, Ji Chang-wook, and Nana is generating anticipation for "Scandal (working title)," which will be released exclusively on Netflix.
