Kim Sung-cheol from 'The Old Woman with the Knife' revealed behind-the-scenes details.
On the morning of the 27th, a production briefing for the film 'The Old Woman with the Knife' (directed by Min Kyu-dong) took place at Lotte Cinema in Kondae, Gwangjin-gu, Seoul. Director Min Kyu-dong and actors Lee Hye-young and Kim Sung-cheol attended the briefing and shared their thoughts.
'The Old Woman with the Knife' is an action drama depicting the intense confrontation between Jo-gak (played by Lee Hye-young), a legendary killer who has operated for over 40 years in an organization that deals with human pests, and Tuu (played by Kim Sung-cheol), a mysterious killer who has chased him his whole life.
That day, when asked about his first impression of 'The Old Woman with the Knife,' Kim Sung-cheol said, "After reading the screenplay and simultaneously going through the original novel, I found it very captivating. I had already heard that Lee Hye-young would be in it, so I imagined her while reading it myself. The actual filming was tougher than I imagined, but looking back, I feel that it incorporated not just simple action, but the essence of a drama in its climax, which I thought was well blended into the film."
He went on to explain about the character Tuu, saying, "He suddenly appears and searches for Jo-gak. I don't know what kind of life he lived for 20 years, but he suddenly became a killer. The film will reveal more of the story but basically, his true intentions are hard to discern. Everything he says and does raises questions about why he acts that way and what significance lies behind it, which makes him an intriguing character throughout the film."
He added, "While filming, the director insisted on doing all the Tuu action scenes in long takes. For Tuu's first appearance, it had to be striking. We rehearsed for about two hours and thought we could get it done in five takes, but it took 17. We didn't get the okay."
In response, director Min Kyu-dong honestly stated, "There are many action movies and killer films, but as we try to create a character like Tuu, I wanted to present it in a different way."
Meanwhile, 'The Old Woman with the Knife' is set to be released in theaters on May 1.
