Actor Park Bo-gum directly addressed the issue of missing screen time in "When Life Gives You Tangerines." Attention is focused on whether the fourth act will meet viewers' expectations.
On the 22nd, a video titled "Same-age chemistry is great. "Geum" is great" was released on the YouTube channel "EZIGUM."
The video depicted IU inviting Park Bo-gum, with whom she collaborated on the Netflix original "When Life Gives You Tangerines," to have a conversation. The two captivated viewers by playing the roles of Ae-sun and Kwan-sik in the first act of "When Life Gives You Tangerines."
Since they collaborated on the same project, IU and Park Bo-gum discussed "When Life Gives You Tangerines." IU said, "I watched up to episode 13 and cried a lot, so when I woke up in the morning, my eyes were swollen. The story of Ae-sun and Kwan-sik becoming middle-aged is mainly what happens, and seeing scenes I hadn't watched made me tear up." Park Bo-gum noted, "It was like this even while filming the drama, but the seniors really supported us, and I felt grateful and it was cool to see every character come to life."
IU and Park Bo-gum expressed that they felt disappointed that the story of young Ae-sun and Kwan-sik was short. Park Bo-gum said, "People around me congratulated me, saying that they wished more stories about Kwan-sik's crew cut days and Ae-sun's bobbed hair days would come out."
IU empathized, saying, "It feels regrettable because it’s so short," and Park Bo-gum stated, "In fact, when this is over, we become parents with Geum-myung (IU), so I wish we could have seen that part more. But no, I'm also curious about our look as parents. But aren't we slowly coming out later? So I told them to look forward to it until the end."
"When Life Gives You Tangerines" is a work that unfolds the adventurous life of Ae-sun (IU), a "rebellious troublemaker" born in Jeju in the 1960s, and Kwan-sik (Park Bo-gum), a "foolish strongman." The first act (episodes 1-4) was released on the 7th. The second act (episodes 5-8) and the third act (episodes 9-12) were released on the 14th and 21st, respectively, raising reactions that Park Bo-gum's screen time has noticeably decreased since the second act. With prior promotions highlighting Park Bo-gum and IU as the lead actors, voices of disappointment regarding Park Bo-gum's missing screen time have grown louder.
In response, Netflix stated to OSEN, ""When Life Gives You Tangerines" is a work depicting the adventurous life of Ae-sun and Kwan-sik, and through middle-aged Ae-sun and Kwan-sik, who have become parents, it will bring a lot of fun and emotion. We ask for your continued interest in the stories of Ae-sun and Kwan-sik, Geum-myung and Eul-myung in the remaining fourth act."
"When Life Gives You Tangerines" now has only the fourth act (episodes 13-16) left. As of the 20th, it ranked sixth globally in the Netflix TV shows category according to Flicks Patrol, a site that aggregates global OTT rankings. It ranked first in South Korea, as well as in Hong Kong, Indonesia, the Philippines, Bangladesh, Thailand, Taiwan, and Vietnam.
