Businessperson Lee Soon-sil, a defector from North Korea, made a bold statement about the taste preferences of Koreans.
In the 298th episode of KBS2's "Boss' Ears Are Donkeys' Ears" (directed by Ahn Sang-eun), aired on the 23rd, Lee Soon-sil was shown revealing a new menu to Jung Joon-ha while dreaming of opening a restaurant in Gangnam, continuing from the previous broadcast.
On that day, Lee Soon-sil presented a warm Pyongyang-style rice bowl topped with handmade acorn noodles, which she made as a secret new menu item to captivate the taste of Gangnam, along with savory mung bean pancakes.
However, after tasting the broth, Jung Joon-ha made a blunt assessment, saying, "It has an incredibly healthy taste." He then added, "North Korean food is too bland," and insisted, "This dish needs a lot of red pepper sauce," adding extra.
In response, Lee Soon-sil expressed her frustration, stating, "If you lived in North Korea, you should choose North Korean flavors. South Korean food is spicy, salty, sweet, and sour. There are so many of these kinds of foods that I hope South Koreans can eat pure dishes too. Everything is so stimulating that it makes you sick. It should be pure like North Korea, with the taste of salt, fermented soybean paste, and soy sauce. This is the taste of the Korean people."
However, after trying Jung Joon-ha's version of the kalguksu, Lee Soon-sil acknowledged, "It’s delicious." Ultimately, the rice bowl was decided to be a bland version from Soon-sil, while the soybean paste bibim kalguksu became a version "stimulated" by Jung Joon-ha with added red pepper sauce and seaweed.
