Former national skeleton team athlete Yun Sung-bin made a blunt remark about the 'Kangaroo generation' in their 30s, resulting in backlash that led to the deletion of a controversial video.
Recently, a video titled “From Yun Sung-bin's management diet to views on dating” was posted on the YouTube channel 'Iron Bin Yun Sung-bin.' In the video, Yun Sung-bin expressed curiosity when a staff member stated, “I am a Kangaroo generation.”
In response, the staff explained, “It means living with your parents. There are many in their 30s who are part of the Kangaroo generation these days,” to which Yun Sung-bin asked, “Why is that? Why aren’t they becoming independent?” The staff replied, “It's because there’s no money,” prompting Yun Sung-bin to react with confusion, saying, “Is it because there’s no money or because they spend it excessively? Why is there no money? They are working, right? Is it because the cost of living is high?”
The staff defended, saying, “After paying rent and living expenses, there’s nothing left,” but Yun Sung-bin countered, “Can’t they just save on living expenses?”
Hearing this, the staff was surprised and said, “You are making controversial remarks in real-time,” and asked, “What do you think is an appropriate standard for living expenses?” Yun Sung-bin stated, “That depends on what one earns.”
When the staff pleaded, “If you’re earning minimum wage, it's around 200,000 to 230,000 won. After paying rent, utilities, and monthly expenses, it amounts to 1 million won. That leaves you with 130,000 won to live on, and after food and transportation costs, very little is left,” Yun Sung-bin ultimately advised, “When you’re new, just live with your parents for a while.”
Although he advised living with parents while starting out, Yun Sung-bin's remarks revealed a lack of understanding regarding the reality faced by 30-something office workers, where prices are rising but salaries are not, leading to further controversy.
Netizens reacted that Yun Sung-bin's comments were inappropriate, saying things like, “The staff hinted multiple times, but he didn’t catch on,” “He has no sense of reality,” “He is out of touch with the world,” and “He is thoughtless.”
In response, the Yun Sung-bin YouTube team restricted the comment function, but after the criticism continued, they eventually deleted the video.
