The musical Again 'Dream High' is set to open on April 5, featuring Lee Ji-hoon, Kim Da-hyun, and Jung Dong-hwa, who play the role of 'Kang Oh-hyeok', sharing insights into the making process of the production through a Q&A format.
The musical Again 'Dream High' (organized by Art One Company / producer Kim Eun-ha) depicts the story of the main characters who dreamed of becoming K-pop stars at Kirin High School, returning to the school after graduating high school. Lee Ji-hoon, Kim Da-hyun, and Jung Dong-hwa take on the role of 'Kang Oh-hyeok', a character with a strong sense of justice who chooses to stand by the children and protect their dreams. The 'Kang Oh-hyeok trio' noted that Park Kyung-rim, who joined as the creative director, has made the rehearsal atmosphere even more lively. Below is a Q&A with Lee Ji-hoon (hereafter referred to as Lee), Kim Da-hyun (hereafter referred to as Kim), and Jung Dong-hwa (hereafter referred to as Jung), who play the role of Kang Oh-hyeok.
1. What are your thoughts on participating in 'Dream High'?
Lee: When people think of 'Dream High', they often associate it with dreams and hope. I'm really happy to be able to convey that emotion directly on stage, but at the same time, I feel a bit of pressure. It is particularly meaningful for me to portray 'Kang Oh-hyeok', a character who never gives up on the children. I want to convey courage to many people through this character. I've had a good relationship with creative director Park Kyung-rim for a long time, so I'm very glad and reassured to be able to work together. Her passion and warm energy are embedded in 'Dream High', and I am doing my best on stage thanks to that power.
Kim: Having gone to a performing arts high school during my high school years, I can relate even more since I lived a similar life to the 'Dream High' members, and I'm happy to be part of it.
Jung: I wondered, 'Have I ever been this happy on stage?' This production made me reflect on that. It's because 'Dream High' is a story about the 'dreams' we all had as children. I am grateful and happy to encounter 'Dream High' again, reminiscing about that dream and running toward future dreams.
2. What unique charm points does 'Dream High' have? And if you were to tease what kind of charm you would show?
Lee: There are many who remember the drama. The moving story and iconic songs meet the genre of musical, giving a stronger resonance. In particular, the live music performed by the actors and the vibrant energy explode on stage, and I want to share that moment with the audience. I want to showcase not only Kang Oh-hyeok's warm humanity but also how he changes because of his students. At first, he may seem indifferent and rough, but actually, he is a teacher who loves the students more than anyone else. I hope that comes across naturally on stage.
Kim: The character 'Kang Oh-hyeok' works together with junior students and helps fulfill their dreams, which is very similar to me. I am also dreaming of a dream that continues on, not just something that ends when achieved, and that helps me in my acting.
3. Having returned for the encore performance following the original production, what changes do you feel in your mindset or character interpretation?
Jung: The drama line has become richer and the relationships between characters have deepened. Although 'Dream High' is a 'musical', it is not just a piece for 'show' but aims to provide the audience with a heartwarming drama, so we are paying more attention to that aspect. As a result, I think the warmth and humanity of Teacher Oh-hyeok will stand out more than before.
4. Park Kyung-rim is part of the production as creative director; can you share what kind of piece it is becoming?
Lee: Creative director Park Kyung-rim truly has the power to move people's hearts. She always has a cheerful energy, and that translates to the actors as well. Thanks to her, this production is becoming warmer and more enjoyable. We're all preparing with a united heart, and I hope that energy reaches the audience.
Kim: It has been very helpful. Overall, I feel moved and grateful watching her care for the actors and dancers as if they were seniors or mothers.
Jung: It is wonderful and amazing that she is leading us to create a work that provides joy and inspiration to people of all ages. Personally, I played 'Tracy' and 'Link' in the musical 'Hairspray' with Kyung-rim 15 years ago, and now meeting again as the principal and teacher is a fresh and exciting experience.
5. If you could say something to your character, Kang Oh-hyeok, what would it be?
Lee: "You're already a good teacher." Kang Oh-hyeok is not a perfect teacher. However, he worries for the students, gets back up after stumbling, and tries not to give up. Watching him, I learn a lot as well. "Sometimes it might be hard and you may want to give up, but the feelings you have for your students are real. That sincerity will eventually reach the children." I want to tell him this.
Kim: Don't lose your dreams and hope. Keep going, Oh-hyuk!
Jung: Keep going!
6. What is your favorite number in the show and why?
Lee: I really love 'Starlight'. When this song plays, the emotions in the piece peak, and every time I sing it, the lyrics resonate with me and bring a wave of emotion. The melody and the message of the song encapsulate the essence of 'Dream High', so I hope the audience listens closely.
Kim: 'Look in the mirror'. I think this number, which encourages one to reflect on themselves, can help us in real life as well.
Jung: I also love 'Look in the mirror'. It may seem like a song for Sam-dong, but it feels like a song for one's reflection in the mirror, which always moves me. Above all, the song is really great. Hwang Tae-sung is the best!
7. Is there anyone you particularly hope will see this performance?
Lee: I hope all my fellow actors who have worked with me in the musical, as well as those who support me, can see this work in person. 'Dream High' is not just a growth story; it's a piece that allows you to revisit dreams that you might have lost. I hope through this performance, many people can remember their dreams and regain the strength to challenge them again.
Jung: While I was the protagonist on stage, I want to invite those who are the true protagonists of life, living diligently outside the stage despite various circumstances.
8. A word for the audience coming to see the performance
Lee: We all live with our individual dreams. However, there are times when those dreams can become blurry, and you might feel like giving up. I hope 'Dream High' can give you courage again. Our actors will take the stage with the heart to support your dreams with every performance. I hope you can breathe together and share emotions, gaining the strength to soar toward your dreams again. I look forward to that moment together with you. See you at the theater.
Kim: As long as we have dreams and hope, we cannot stop. Keep dancing. I gift a little passion to your tired and weary hearts. Come to enjoy!
Jung: I will show you the dreams you had forgotten! Let's meet at our theater! I support your dreams. Keep dancing in 'Dream High'!
