The Disney fantasy musical "Snow White" premiered today (19th) in South Korea and France, as industry officials forecasted its box office performance.
According to a report from the U.S. entertainment outlet Deadline on the 18th (local time), "Snow White," which premiered in France and South Korea on this day, will be released in 4,200 theaters across North America starting on the 19th. Additionally, it will be released in Germany, Italy, Australia, Brazil, and Mexico, and will premiere in China on Friday.
The expected opening score for "Snow White" in North America is between $45 million and $50 million (approximately 72.7 billion won). It is anticipated to earn $55 million (approximately 80 billion won) in countries outside North America.
However, this figure is less than half of the production cost of "Snow White," which is $270 million (approximately 392.5 billion won). Initially, the production cost of "Snow White" was estimated to be around $180 million, but it significantly increased due to multiple reshoots and additional VFX work. Moreover, according to ScreenRant, the estimated breakeven point for "Snow White" is nearing at least $500 million (approximately 727 billion won).
This is raising concerns as it reflects a lower opening score than a similar case that sparked casting controversies before its release, "The Little Mermaid." At that time, "The Little Mermaid" achieved a North American opening score of $95.5 million and grossed $298.1 million worldwide.
"Snow White"'s ability to achieve global box office success despite negative public opinion is being closely watched.
"Snow White" is a magical story about Disney's first princess, Snow White, who fights with good heart and courage to reclaim her kingdom stolen by the evil Queen, and it is the first fantasy musical film set for 2025.
According to the Korea Film Council's KOBIS tally, on the release day, the number of advance ticket purchasers for "Snow White" in South Korea was confirmed to be around 35,000.
