Seulgi of Red Velvet achieved a successful comeback through the release of her second mini album 'Accidentally On Purpose' on March 10. This album particularly focuses on Seulgi's diverse aspects that have never been seen before, receiving a positive response from global listeners due to her musical growth and bold transformation.
The process and implementation method of completing this highly anticipated second mini album were shared through firsthand accounts from the music, visuals, and music video team members who detailed the behind-the-scenes work.
# ALBUM_'Seulgi'ful music world… an album completed after communication and consideration!
This album showcased a variety of genres and emotions compared to its predecessor, demonstrating Seulgi's expanded musical spectrum and new possibilities. The A&R representative noted, “The goal we set from the production stage with Seulgi for this album was to create music that can be enjoyed comfortably. At the same time, we aimed to showcase Seulgi's natural charm that has not been widely seen by the public yet. We wanted to establish Seulgi’s unique musical color and direction, and in that sense, we tried to reflect her musical taste a lot. We put effort into selecting songs by listening to many candidates and discussing them.”
Regarding the title track 'Baby, Not Baby', it was said, “As we initially set the goal, I thought it was a song that allowed both the listener and Seulgi, the performer, to naturally showcase her charm and enjoy it in a pleasant way. Since the writer KENZIE, who has been watching Seulgi for a long time, wrote the lyrics, Seulgi’s character is nicely infused in every line, making the song title resonate with Seulgi herself.” They further added, “While Seulgi only contributed lyrics for the song 'Weakness', she provided ideas about what stories she wanted to tell and what tone would be suitable for lyrics in other tracks like 'Whatever,' and 'Rollin' (With My Homies)'. As the album is filled with songs chosen with everyone’s agreement, a lot of unseen detailed aspects contain Seulgi’s traces.”
# VISUAL_'Bad Girl' Seulgi's birth… a perfect synergy of exceptional planning and outstanding expression!
Seulgi presented a distinctive and unique visual through different styling and detailed direction in this album. Particularly about the central 'Bad Girl' concept, the creative visual director stated, “After listening to this album, the keyword ‘mischief’ came to mind. It is a keyword that shares a similarity with the album title 'Accidentally On Purpose', whilst providing a visual differentiation from what has been seen before. However, to maintain a mischievous charm that is unpredictable, we utilized the character ‘Bad Girl’ as a narrative device to add layers to the story.”
Additionally, regarding the jacket shooting scene, it was noted, “I wanted to engrave Seulgi’s iconic aspects. Achieving the purpose solely through planning was a challenge, but Seulgi expressed it excellently, allowing us to achieve our goal 200%.” The styling that received the best response on set was identified as “the ‘pink hair’ outfit, which fans have also mentioned a lot. There were opinions from the planning meeting that it was a suitable outfit for this concept, and after all styling was completed, Seulgi exceeded our expectations with her striking appearance. I remember there were continuous cheers, even though it was a very late-night shoot.”
# MUSIC VIDEO_Seulgi's new attempt… a moment everyone found thrilling!
The music video for the new song 'Baby, Not Baby' captured Seulgi's bold appearance with a sensuous visual style, generating explosive buzz immediately upon release. The music video director shared, “We aimed to give a bold and daring impression so that Seulgi, as an artist, could present herself in a new light. While the deeper atmosphere of her first solo album was wonderful, this time, I wanted to emphasize that she is an ‘all-rounder artist’ who can also handle witty breakdowns. To achieve this, new attempts had to be made, and it was a project made possible because Seulgi willingly embraced the challenge.”
Additionally, regarding the most memorable moment, it was recalled, “When we filmed the first group dance scene, Seulgi danced so well that I remember it was an exhilarating moment for the director and all the staff involved. There were movements in the car scene of the intro that Seulgi was attempting for the first time, but she handled it exceptionally well, exceeding expectations. I was worried if the mascara streaks would look alright, but Seulgi did an excellent job acting with a nonchalant expression. Watching her perform with such abandon made me think she truly is an artist.”
Meanwhile, Seulgi will appear on various music programs including Mnet's 'M Countdown' on March 20, KBS2's 'Music Bank' on the 21st, and SBS's 'Inkigayo' on the 23rd, presenting the stage for the title track 'Baby, Not Baby'.
