Pretending not to know everything, she spews ugly words as if they were pretty. In "When Life Gives You Tangerines," actress Pyoh Young-seo has made a strong impression as the annoying stingy college friend of Geum-myung.

Actress Pyoh Young-seo adorned an aspect of a 1960s college student in "When Life Gives You Tangerines." In the Netflix series, which captures Aesoon (played by IU) and Gwan-sik's (played by Park Bo-gum) adventure-filled lives across the 1960s Jeju to 2025 Seoul, Pyoh Young-seo appears as Oh Ye-rim, a fellow student of Geum-myung's (played by IU) who has just enrolled at Seoul National University. Ye-rim is a naïve rich girl who grew up in a harmonious and affluent household thanks to her father, who is a prosecutor. In contrast to Geum-myung, who has come up from Jeju and is busy balancing dorm life and part-time work to continue her studies, Ye-rim enjoys ample family support and boasts of her comfortable circumstances, poking at Geum-myung's painful spots.

Despite knowing everything, Ye-rim, who looks down on Geum-myung while pretending to be sophisticated, is wrapped up in her own inferiority complex. When friends talk negatively about Geum-myung, she pretends to take her side without actually standing with her. Ye-rim feels a sense of pride in her background, looking down on Geum-myung’s less fortunate financial situation. She disregards Geum-myung like a self-hypnotic exercise, and ultimately inscribes her thorny words into Geum-myung's heart.

"Just because your grades were one point higher than mine, you’re not going abroad; it’s all about the environment and conditions that count," Ye-rim's words reflect her pride in circumstances that cannot be chosen, ultimately proving to be hollow. Pyoh Young-seo vividly depicted Ye-rim's inferiority and jealousy. The style is transparently revealing. Even if she wraps her ugly words in pretty packaging, they remain ugly words, and although she seems to show generosity, there's no kindness in her gaze. Pyoh Young-seo expressed Ye-rim's true feelings candidly. Geum-myung, who she feels is inferior, recognizes that Geum-myung is better than her but pretends not to know it and borrows her parents' words to disrespect Geum-myung once more, seemingly finding comfort in belittling her.

The gaze that looks intently at the other person feels tinged with malice. Yet, her innocent and kind-seeming smile seems reminiscent of a child's jealousy and focuses attention on the character. Pyoh Young-seo previously captured viewers' interest in the Netflix series "Hierarchy" as Ryuba-da and in the drama "Speed Going to You 493km" as Hwang Si-eun. Expectations for Pyoh Young-seo's work activities, which have caught viewers' attention once again through "When Life Gives You Tangerines," continue to grow.

Meanwhile, the series "When Life Gives You Tangerines," which has attracted attention with Pyoh Young-seo's bubbly performance, will exclusively release Act 3 on Netflix on the 21st.
