Actor Lee Soo-mi delivered a powerful performance in "When Life Gives You Tangerines."
"When Life Gives You Tangerines" (written by Lim Sang-chun and directed by Kim Won-seok) is a Netflix series that unfolds the adventurous life of Aesoon (played by IU), a "bratty rebel" born in Jeju, and Kwan-sik (played by Park Bo-gum), a "hopeless fool." Lee Soo-mi plays Aesoon's aunt, Yang-im, a haenyeo, demonstrating her reliable side as Aesoon's guardian.
Warm yet firm, Yang-im cherished Aesoon, who lost her parents at a young age and has lived a difficult life, like her own daughter, sharing in the ups and downs of her life. Yang-im boldly confronted Aesoon's tormentors, grandmother Park Mak-cheon (played by Kim Yong-rim) and mother Kwon Gye-ok (played by Oh Min-ae), and was always the first to take care of Aesoon whenever tough times arose, bringing warmth.
Lee Soo-mi captivated audiences with her expressive yet delicate portrayal of Yang-im, a character with a unique background as a haenyeo. Fluent in the natural dialect of Jeju, she enhanced the character's personality and freely navigated between restrained and explosive emotions, increasing the immersion in the drama.
Additionally, her excellent chemistry with fellow haenyeo Yeom Hye-ran, Baek Ji-won, and Cha Mi-gyeong added to the drama's charm. While engaging in lively banter during dives, they also comforted each other in times of pain, capturing the sentiments of the era. Lee Soo-mi vividly conveyed the deep bonds of Jeju's haenyeo through her natural ensemble with her co-actors.
With extensive experience on the theater stage, Lee Soo-mi has built strong acting skills. She made a lasting impression with a brief appearance as Wang I-mo, a housekeeper in the "Hospital Playlist" series. Later, in "Mask Girl," she portrayed a strong villain, Ahn Eun-sook, who disrupts the protagonist's life, maximizing the tension of the drama with her godly performance.
By embodying a variety of characters in each work, he has proven his wide acting spectrum. He successfully completed another challenge through "When Life Gives You Tangerines." With this work, Lee Soo-mi has further solidified her status as a "reliable actress," and attention is drawn to how she will showcase new acting transformations in the future.
