Director Yeon Sang-ho of 'Revelation' shared a story about how he first received contact from master Alfonso Cuarón.
On the morning of the 18th, a production briefing for the Netflix movie 'Revelation' was held on the second floor of Hotel Naru Seoul MGallery in Mapo-gu, Seoul. Leading actors Ryu Jun-yeol, Shin Hyun-bin, Shin Min-jae, and director Yeon Sang-ho attended the event.
'Revelation,' based on the original comic of the same name, depicts a story where a pastor (played by Ryu Jun-yeol), who believes that punishing the culprit of a missing person case is a divine revelation, and a detective (played by Shin Hyun-bin) who is haunted by the spirit of a deceased younger sibling pursue their beliefs.
This work stands out for its collaboration between director Yeon Sang-ho, who raises sharp questions about human instincts and offers new and unique genre entertainment, and writer Choi Kyu-seok, who is recognized for his provocative and fresh materials as well as immersive storytelling. Notably, this film features acclaimed master Alfonso Cuarón, known for both commercial success and artistic merit with works such as 'Roma' and 'Gravity,' participating as an executive producer, drawing significant interest and anticipation for the encounter between creators Yeon Sang-ho and Alfonso Cuarón. In addition, actors Ryu Jun-yeol, Shin Hyun-bin, and Shin Min-jae showcase explosive performances with impressive synergy.
Yeon Sang-ho said, "Alfonso Cuarón is greatly influential among people my age. 'Children of Men' had a significant impact on me. He is a master of long takes and always incorporates cinematic inventions into his films," and noted, "One day, director Alfonso Cuarón contacted me through a production company, saying, 'I want to collaborate on something with you.' He mentioned that Korean films are also fine, not just English movies."
He continued, "At that time, I was thinking about the idea for 'Revelation.' The works I've done had a strong genre characteristic, so 'Revelation' had many Korean elements. When I was wondering, 'Can it appeal globally?' I had my first discussion with director Alfonso Cuarón," adding, "I spoke with director Alfonso Cuarón about whether a Korean story could be made in a global way, and he liked this idea, saying, 'It doesn’t seem like a Korean story but a universal story.' So, we started making it. Since then, we've communicated by sending multiple versions of the edited footage and more and shared insights behind the scenes."
Meanwhile, 'Revelation' will be released worldwide on Netflix in over 190 countries on the 21st.
