Actress Jang Seo-hee reveals the behind-the-scenes story of her first leading role in the drama 'The Mermaid.'
In the 11th episode of the jointly produced entertainment show 'Being Single,' airing on SBS Plus and E Channel at 8:40 p.m. on the 18th (Tuesday), it depicts Jang Seo-hee visiting Naksansa Temple in Yangyang, Gangwon Province, as she seeks her own peace of mind along with co-hosts Shin Dong-yeob, Hwang Jung-eum, and 'Single Sister' Lee Soo-kyung.
On this day, Jang Seo-hee notes, "Sokcho and Yangyang are places that give me good energy, so I come often. I filmed the drama 'Temptation of Wife' here and it became a big hit, and since then, many good things have happened. Thanks to that, I also got the opportunity to enter the Chinese market." Hearing this, Shin Dong-yeob asks, "I heard you shot a drama worth hundreds of billions in China?" Jang Seo-hee replies, "It was worth 50 billion won. However, it got distorted as if I received 50 billion won as my appearance fee," and waves her hand dismissively. In response, Shin Dong-yeob jokes, "Then did Jang Seo-hee's appearance fee amount to about 40 billion won?" which causes everyone to burst into laughter.
Afterward, Jang Seo-hee tours around Naksansa Temple and makes a bow. She shares the reason for her bowing, stating, "When I was 31, I was cast in the drama 'The Mermaid' for my first leading role. I was given a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, but I felt uneasy myself. So, I consulted a monk, and he advised me to try 3,000 bows." Following the monk's suggestion, Jang Seo-hee performed 3,000 bows over 9 hours, saying, "Immediately afterward, 'The Mermaid' became a huge hit, and I wanted to carry that energy forward, so I continued to do 3,000 bows every year for 10 years," which surprised everyone.
Jang Seo-hee also frankly confesses about the mental anguish she experienced after being cast in 'The Mermaid.' She recounts, "When I was cast as the lead, there were looks of surprise suggesting 'the actress who always played small roles suddenly became the lead.' The more that happened, the more I felt determined and, recalling the people who ignored me, I acted," revealing her secret of being able to ascend as the 'Queen of Revenge.'
In response, Lee Soo-kyung responds, "I have also been cut during filming before," empathizing strongly. Hwang Jung-eum similarly confesses, "I had a similar experience," piquing curiosity about the reasons why the two actresses were forced to exit the production. After completing her visit to Naksansa Temple, Jang Seo-hee heads to the beach nearby where she filmed 'Temptation of Wife.' Here, she falls into thought and suddenly dots her eyes. Viewers are left wondering if Jang Seo-hee, transformed into Min So-hee from 'Temptation of Wife,' is reenacting a famous scene from the drama or why she unexpectedly dotted her eyes.
