Suhyun of the group U-KISS has embarked on a solo career, returning as solo artist Shin Suhyun.
Suhyun recently held a commemorative interview at a cafe in Gangnam, Seoul, for the release of his first single album 'I am' and discussed his new song.
Suhyun's debut first single album 'I am' captures his first steps on a new musical journey. His efforts to find his voice and the longing and determination felt during that process are all recorded. It showcases Suhyun's will to present a different side.
In particular, Suhyun added significance to this album by releasing it on the 11th, his birthday. He noted, "It's the first time an album is coming out on my birthday. Many people have congratulated me, but rather, I feel like this album, coming out now, is a gift I want to give back for all the congratulations I received. I'm happy because it's my birthday, and I can give a gift. That's how I feel."
He explained the reason for releasing the album on his birthday, saying, "I have been using the stage name Suhyun for 17 years, but now as I stand alone as a solo artist, I will be active under the three letters Shin Suhyun. I wanted to show my own unique side and color as Shin Suhyun, and there was this idea that maybe I could release it on my birthday since the timing was right."
Suhyun's title track 'Surprisingly, I'm Easily' is a song that combines diverse band sounds with lyrics capturing the complex feelings of love. Suhyun's expressive vocals delicately portray the song's poignancy.
He commented on the title track, stating, "I had tried every genre during my time with U-KISS. I was unsure about what kind of music I should pursue as a solo artist. Personally, I wanted to present a refreshing song that is both poignant and can express various feelings, so I thought rock sound music would be good, and my agency agreed with that opinion."
He added, "When I first received the guide track, the CEO and I listened to it together, and we both agreed that this had to be the title track. The music genre suited me well, and I wanted the first song to have a melody that everyone could relate to and that is easy to listen to. Personally, I felt confident that I could sing it well."
Prior to the album release, Suhyun engaged in music broadcast activities with 'Another Beginning,' a remade debut song of the late Seo Ji-won. He mentioned, "I have always liked Seo Ji-won's songs. I used to sing 'Gathering My Tears' a lot on broadcasts. I knew the song 'Another Beginning' but hadn't looked deeply at the lyrics. When I saw the lyrics, I found them very similar to my situation. I talked to the company because I wanted to do this as Shin Suhyun."
He expressed, "I thought I was going to die from nervousness during the music broadcast recording. In my previous solo activities, I had dancers with me, but this time I had to go up there all alone. While rehearsing, I realized that with today's advanced technology, everything, including my trembling hands, was clearly visible in 8K. Since they're all juniors, I felt like I was distancing myself from them. Of course, they came over to greet me, but I felt it was hard for me to approach them, and I was worried they might feel uncomfortable if I did. Honestly, I wanted to try a challenge but couldn't because I found it difficult to approach them, but I definitely want to make the first move next time."
When asked about his satisfaction with the album, he expressed, "Super satisfied," adding, "It's really good. I'm very confident in this album. I feel a bit regretful that it lacks some songs, but once the master was completed and I listened to all of them one by one, I felt they were great. Friends around me told me they understood the feelings I wanted to express, which surprised me. I think the emotions I feel about music are deeply conveyed, and the lyrics are such that they allow listeners to imagine a lot, so I think they will enjoy it – I am super satisfied."
So what is the charm of solo artist Shin Suhyun? He revealed, "I was the main vocalist in U-KISS, specializing in high notes. I sang the chorus a lot, and I am confident in various genres, so I have a strong desire to show several colors within rock sound."
Finally, he conveyed, "Having embarked on this solo career and releasing this album, I almost have a one-year plan fully prepared. Rather than achievements, I hope people recognize that the person Shin Suhyun sings these songs. I really want to be active and steadily release new songs so fans won't get bored, and when the opportunity arises, I want to meet in various formats such as variety shows or musicals."
