The movie 'Mickey 17,' which has surpassed 2 million viewers and continues its box office dominance, successfully concluded its relay GV.
As a consumable (expendable) used in dangerous tasks, 'Mickey,' who is printed again upon death, faces his 17th death crisis, during which 'Mickey 18' is printed, leading to unpredictable events in the movie 'Mickey 17,' which has been met with enthusiastic reactions from the audience.
On March 8, during the GV conducted by film journalist Lee Eun-sun, Director Bong Joon-ho shared various and in-depth stories about the film. When asked how 'Mickey' appears with narration, Director Bong stated, 'There was briefly a narration in the latter part of 'Parasite,' and I felt it was interesting when we shot and edited that sequence. So, I thought I wanted to do something similar in 'Mickey 17,' and I remember it was very interesting as Robert Pattinson's voiceover sounded like a cartoon character.'
Continuing with remarks on the humor of 'Mickey 17,' which shows its character's development while evoking laughter in unexpected ways, Director Bong said, 'Robert Pattinson and 'Mickey' are such pitiful characters. They always feel like they're at a loss. We talked a lot about what tone would fit if such a character was to whine timidly. This movie has actions and dialogue details that make you think, 'How could this appear in a sci-fi film?' While considering this context, Robert Pattinson would have experimented with various tones.'
The story turned to 'Creeper,' which also displayed an unforgettable presence. Director Bong noted, 'Humans continuously cause 'Mickey' to die, and the remainder of the group feels guilt under the excuse that he can be reprinted. However, the 'Creepers' all rush out into the wilderness to save just one 'Zoko,' performing a grand spectacle. This point is very contrasting.' Director Bong reflected on how, despite dealing with many characters in the film, none had evoked such affection and hope for their success as 'Mickey.' He concluded, 'I hope you all can share that feeling while watching 'Mickey 17.'
In the GV held on March 9, Director Bong and music director Jung Jae-il attended, engaging in discussions about the music of 'Mickey 17' under the moderation of music critic Bae Soon-tak. Music director Jung announced a special opening for the GV by playing 'Nasha' and 'Barnes' from the OST of 'Mickey 17' on piano.
Introducing himself as someone who 'interprets the visions of directors through music,' music director Jung explained, 'Barnes' was created without looking at the screen during the script stage, but when I played it for Director Bong, it ended up being included in the movie's finale. I love the piano and orchestra, and playing the piano without restraint while collaborating with the London Symphony was an honor.'
When asked about the music he felt had the best harmony with the scenes, Director Bong replied, 'The piece 'Mayhem,' which accompanies 'Luko' when he is shot, is very powerful and dramatic. When I first heard it in the recording studio, I was overwhelmed and clapped.'
In response to a question about the significant aspects during the process of working on 'Mickey 17's music, music director Jung stated, 'The 'Creepers' had no intention of eating 'Mickey,' and 'Nasha' embraced him. These two elements were the most essential.'
Finally, Director Bong remarked, 'While there might be scenes that linger in your mind after watching the film, I often remember the melodies that flowed over the film. I believe music is the most beautiful flower in the complex task of filmmaking, and I always feel grateful as if music director Jung gifted me a bouquet.' Music director Jung added, 'It was a great honor to collaborate once again on a film about love, especially one by Director Bong.'
Successfully concluding the GV amid the enthusiastic responses of fans, Director Bong Joon-ho's new film 'Mickey 17' premiered in Korea on the 28th of last month, making its global debut.
