Chef An Seong-jae revealed the reason he declined to appear in entertainment.
On 9th, the MBC entertainment program 'Good Day' (directed by Kim Tae-ho, produced by TEO) depicted Chef An Seong-jae meeting with G-Dragon.
On this day, Defcon noted, 'I am honored. This person originally doesn’t participate in entertainment. He turned down many invitations. But his coming here means he really likes you. Thanks to you, we're meeting as well.'
The protagonist was Chef An Seong-jae. Upon his appearance, G-Dragon said, 'I visited before this show. When you were in Hannam-dong.' Chef An Seong-jae stated, 'Even if you came, I wouldn’t have gone out. Even if Chairman Lee Jae-yong came, I wouldn’t have gone out. I thought if they needed me, they would have called me,' expressing that he is guarding the kitchen.
Meanwhile, An Seong-jae said he left for the United States at the age of 13, dreaming of becoming a Porsche mechanic. He recalled, 'I watched the first part of 'The Fast and the Furious,' and thought about racing. I kept close to friends who were engaged in racing crew activities and also worked on engine maintenance. I also did car maintenance in the military.'
Defcon asked, 'So you went into cooking instead?' and An Seong-jae replied, 'I was going to attend a maintenance school, but I happened to pass by a cooking school. I was curious to try it out, and it turned out to be fun.' However, An Seong-jae noted that he never felt cooking was his destiny, saying, 'I didn’t know other paths well, so I didn’t give up, and I also didn’t want to waste the time I spent on it. Looking back later, it seems I had been consistent.'
An Seong-jae, who started cooking at the age of 24, mentioned, 'The executive chef was 32 when he received his first star. I thought I needed to achieve it faster than him. Then, I became the executive chef at 30, opened a restaurant at 34, and received a star one year later at 35.'
He added, 'It may sound cliché, but when I asked, 'Who is the top in this field?' I aimed for the best. I thought I had to learn everything and worked, so it seems I advanced more quickly than anyone else.' Upon hearing this, Defcon asked, 'Don’t you usually have to do two years of cleaning and chopping onions when you go with that goal?' An Seong-jae replied, 'I did cleaning for two years. Spending two years doing that is not easy. Those two years became the foundation for everything.'
G-Dragon also shared that he practiced for 11 years. He said, 'I joined SM for 5 years and YG for 6 years. It was a time when the concept of trainees didn’t exist. We practiced hard. We had no salary. We went to school, changed clothes, cleaned, and learned. Whenever seniors practiced, we were worried about disturbing them. We went to observe secretly in a place where no one could see us. 'Practice is essential. You never know what will happen.'
Meanwhile, Defcon wondered, 'It seems you must have received many entertainment offers. Why did you decline them?' An Seong-jae stated, 'I am cooking. I thought I am a cook. I provide inspiration and good flavors through food; I don’t think I am still someone who does other things.'
Since this is his first entertainment appearance after 'The Black-and-White Chef,' An Seong-jae expressed, 'For me, it is an honor to participate in a significant project that can have a positive influence as a chef. There are various genres of people, but I have my own area as a chef, and there’s a life I can showcase. I hope it can have an even greater positive influence.'
