The first blockbuster movie in Korea, 'Shiri,' is coming back.
On the 6th, distributor CJ ENM confirmed the theatrical release of the 4K remastering of 'Shiri' and unveiled the poster and trailer. 'Shiri' depicts the espionage battle between special agent Yoo Jeong-won (Han Suk-kyu) of the national top-secret information agency OP and his colleague Lee Jang-gil (Song Kang-ho) against North Korean special 8th corps commander Park Mu-young (Choi Min-sik), as well as infiltrators and spies from within.
'Shiri,' which premiered in 1999, marked the beginning of the Korean film renaissance and significantly changed the landscape of box office success. It swept the film sector Daesang, Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor awards at the 35th Baeksang Arts Awards, along with the Best Director award at the 20th Blue Dragon Film Awards and the highest number of viewers for Korean films, captivating both audiences and critics.
'Shiri' added an exhilarating action experience and grand spectacle, delivering thrilling espionage and unmissable emotion that had never been seen before in the Korean film industry. As a result, it is evaluated as the first blockbuster and has established itself as the top box office hit of the 1990s.
