The script reading scene of the unprecedented K-fantasy romantic comedy drama 'Gwigung' set to create a boom in 2025 has been revealed.
In April, SBS's new drama 'Gwigung' (scripted by Yoon Soo-jung, directed by Yoon Seong-sik), airing as a follow-up to 'Treasure Island,' is a fantasy romantic comedy where Yeo-ri, a shaman who rejects the destiny of a medium, and Kang-cheol, trapped in the body of Yeo-ri's first love Yoon-gap, confront a wrathful eight-legged goblin harbored by the royal family, resulting in a physically and spiritually entangled narrative. Director Yoon Seong-sik, known for his trusted fun in dramas such as 'Mr. Queen,' 'The Best Lee Soon-shin,' 'Gaksital,' and 'Dae Jo Yeong,' collaborates with writer Yoon Soo-jung, known for 'The King's Face' and 'Go Go Waikiki,' and an exciting cast including Yook Sung-jae, Kim Ji-yeon, Kim Ji-hoon, and a special appearance by Kim Young-kwang has been confirmed.
Among them, stills from the script reading that opens the curtain on 'Gwigung' have captured attention. At this script reading, director Yoon Seong-sik and writer Yoon Soo-jung, along with actors Yook Sung-jae (Yoon-gap/Kang-cheol), Kim Ji-yeon (Yeo-ri), Kim Ji-hoon (Lee-seong), Gil Hae-yeon (Neobdeok), Kim In-kwon (Kim Eung-soon), Son Byung-ho (Kim Bong-in), Han Soo-yeon (Daebi), Han So-eun (Jungjeon), Shin Seul-gi (Choi In-seon), Lee Won-jong (Gasub Master), and Jo Han-gyeol (Bibbi), gathered to deliver an amazing synergy from their very first meeting.
In particular, Yook Sung-jae, who plays the role of 'Yoon-gap,' embodying the villainous Imugi 'Kang-cheol,' captivated the scene with his dual-role performance that managed the character skillfully. Yook Sung-jae showcased the charm of a scribe, boasting a gentle temperament and outstanding looks, while completely embodying the Imugi's godlike arrogance and cleverness, as well as their overwhelming abilities. Moreover, he adeptly handled the unique setup of an Imugi possessing a human body, raising interest in Yook Sung-jae’s fantasy romantic comedy.
Alongside, Kim Ji-yeon, who plays the role of Yeo-ri, selected by the evil Imugi, captivated attention with her delicate expressions and dialogue delivery that breathed life into the character. Kim Ji-yeon perfectly expressed the complex emotions regarding her first love Yoon-gap and the Imugi possessing him, actively rejecting the destiny of a medium and carving out her own fate. Additionally, as a possessor of a pure soul coveted by the Imugi, she seamlessly incorporated her role as a healer comforting the spirits, further amplifying expectations for 'Rising Female Lead' Kim Ji-yeon's impact in 2025.
Above all, Yook Sung-jae and Kim Ji-yeon portrayed an impeccable dynamic, from hilarious comedic banter to deep and mysterious romance, capturing a previously unrecorded relationship of intertwined body and soul. Moreover, the pair showcased a thrilling push-and-pull, linked by the bittersweet ties of first love and a twisted fate, raising curiosity about the unique charm of the romantic comedy between an Imugi and a shaman.
On another note, Kim Ji-hoon, portraying the fictional king 'Lee-seong' who returns as a reformist ruler, exuded a strong charisma with a profound presence. In the drama, Kim Ji-hoon multidimensionally depicted a strong leadership that faces political intrigue for the nation and its citizens, as well as paternal affection in defending his family from the royal family's long-held secrets. Furthermore, laughter was evoked through the feud between the trustworthy minister who has now become the Imugi Yoon-gap, and curiosity was heightened about the fascinating collaboration for exorcism involving the Imugi, the shaman, and the king.
Additionally, actors with robust acting skills, including Gil Hae-yeon, Kim In-kwon, Son Byung-ho, Han Soo-yeon, Han So-eun, Shin Seul-gi, Lee Won-jong, and Jo Han-gyeol, showcased deep performances and flavorful dialogues, effortlessly drawing viewers into the storyline. All attending actors maximized the appeal of the vibrant genre through lively performances that navigate between a comedic fantasy romantic comedy and a chilling palace intrigue.
'The Gwigung' production team noted, "It was a script reading scene where the tight script and the seamless teamwork of the actors shone." They added, "Expectations are building for the extraordinary synergy created by solid actors including Yook Sung-jae, Kim Ji-yeon, Kim Ji-hoon, Gil Hae-yeon, Kim In-kwon, Son Byung-ho, Han Soo-yeon, Han So-eun, Shin Seul-gi, Lee Won-jong, and Jo Han-gyeol.
