Actor Adrien Brody (51) is being called the worst winner at this year's Academy Awards.
Brody won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his film 'Brutalist' at the 97th Academy Awards held at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles, on the afternoon of March 2 (local time).
He received his second Academy Award, surpassing strong competitors including actors Timothée Chalamet, Colman Domingo, Sebastian Stan, and Ralph Fiennes. Brody appeared emotional when his name was called.
However, as he was walking up the stairs to the stage, he suddenly turned around and threw the gum he was chewing into the audience for his girlfriend Georgina Chapman (48). Chapman is also the former partner of the disgraced producer Harvey Weinstein, who is currently in prison for sexual crime scandals.
Chapman was seen making an effort to catch the gum that Brody threw.
This behavior outraged the audience. Negative reactions poured in, including comments like, "Disgusting," "Why throw that to your girlfriend?" and "Brody throwing gum to Chapman while walking up the stairs to receive his award was honestly more shocking than Will Smith hitting Chris Rock."
Immediately after receiving the award, Brody defended his actions on 'Live with Kelly and Mark.' He said, "I could have swallowed it, but that thought didn't occur to me. I had to get rid of it somehow." Chapman revealed that she was unable to catch Brody's gum.
Brody further stirred controversy with a lengthy acceptance speech that lasted 5 minutes and 40 seconds. This is the longest acceptance speech in Academy history.
In his acceptance speech, he expressed gratitude for his acting, his life, and to Chapman and their two children, whom she had with Weinstein.
Due to such behavior from Brody, some are calling this year's Academy Awards 'the most boring awards ceremony in history.'
Kennedy, a columnist for the Daily Mail, also criticized Brody's gum throwing. In his column, he wrote, "As Adrien Brody was walking to receive the Best Actor award, he suddenly stopped and spat the gum he was chewing into his hand, throwing it at his partner Georgina Chapman, the ex of Harvey Weinstein. 'Disgusting! But it seems she must have been holding something much more miserable. Surely, she would do anything to sit in the front row at the Oscars.'"
