"The new horizon of Korean chamber music" violinist Yang Go-woon, cellist Lee Kang-ho, pianist Joo Hee-sung

The Tonus Trio, a leading domestic chamber music ensemble consisting of violinist Yang Go-woon, cellist Lee Kang-ho, and pianist Joo Hee-sung, will present Dvořák's piano trio works at the IBK Chamber Hall of the Seoul Arts Center on March 11.

The Tonus Trio (Tonus Trio) is a chamber music group recognized for its profound musicality and solid synergy, and it is opening a new horizon for Korean chamber music through various series of planned performances and album releases. This concert will allow audiences to appreciate the essence of Romantic chamber music through two masterpieces of Dvořák's piano trio.

In the first part, Dvořák's Piano Trio No. 3 in F minor, Op. 65, will be performed. This piece, composed in 1883, features a deep expression influenced by Brahms and combines elements of Czech folk music. Composed of four movements, this work highlights a rich emotional landscape and delicate musical dialogues from the intense introduction of the first movement to the dynamic and brilliant finale of the last movement. It is a piece that showcases the harmony of dramatic tension and lyrical melody, offering a glimpse into Dvořák's mid-style.

In the second part, Dvořák's Piano Trio No. 4 in E minor, Op. 90, also known as the "Dumky" Trio, will be performed. Composed in 1891, this work is inspired by the Ukrainian folk music form called Dumka and is one of Dvořák's most original and beloved chamber music pieces. It consists of six independent movements, capturing a diverse emotional flow that alternates between sadness and joy. Lyrical, meditative melodies and lively, vibrant dance elements alternate, providing deep emotional impact to listeners.

It will be a time to fully appreciate the uniqueness of Dvořák's music and the Czech folk sentiments through the Tonus Trio's perfect synergy and profound interpretation.

Meanwhile, the Tonus Trio consists of violinist Yang Go-woon (currently a professor at Kyunghee University), cellist Lee Kang-ho (currently the head of the Korea National University of Arts), and pianist Joo Hee-sung (currently a professor at Seoul National University), establishing itself as a top-tier trio in Korea. The predecessor of the trio, the Tonus Quartet, was selected as the representative chamber music group of the New England Conservatory in 1996 and made a grand debut with performances in 10 cities in the northeastern United States.

After transitioning into a trio format, it presented long-term projects such as "Russian Legacy," which introduced the treasure of Russian composers, and the complete performance of Brahms' trios (2016-2017), as well as the "Between Classics and Romantics" (2018-2024), showcasing the essence of chamber music featuring works by classical and romantic composers such as Beethoven, Schubert, and Mendelssohn.

In 2018, they received critical acclaim for the release of their first album, NCM Klassik, featuring Brahms' Piano Trio, and in the same year, they were recognized once again for their musicality by receiving the Byucksan Music Award from the Byucksan Cultural Foundation. A new album consisting of Mendelssohn's piano trio works is also scheduled for release in the first half of 2025.
