Actor Cha Joo-young appeared on "Two O'clock Date with Ahn Young-mi" and talked about "The Queen's Umbrella."
During the live broadcast of MBC FM4U's "Two O'clock Date with Ahn Young-mi" on the 3rd, Cha Joo-young discussed her life work tvN's "The Queen's Umbrella," stating, "Historical dramas are difficult. They have to be based on historical facts, so it seems that just acting well won't be enough. I had to study a lot and seek much advice. Balancing everything was challenging, but I have been mimicking the tone and manner of historical dramas since childhood. I thought I would be able to do well."
He smiled as he noted his reliance on subtle eye expressions, saying, "I am the type who is faithful to the script. Surprisingly, there are limitations to the actions shown by the queen role. It's a character that shouldn't be overly cute, so I could only express it through my eyes. I must convey the story through my eyes. Thank you for recognizing that. I don't calculate much. I express as much as I feel."
The recently concluded "The Queen's Umbrella," which ended last month, is centered around Queen Won-Gyeong, who seized power alongside her husband, King Taejong Lee Bang-won. It is a female-centric narrative recreated from Queen Won-Gyeong's perspective, unlike the previously spotlighted King Taejong Lee Bang-won, featuring kings and queens, husbands and wives, and the hidden intense stories in between.
Cha Joo-young transformed into "Queen Won-Gyeong" herself and received immense love. However, prior to airing, there were various controversies surrounding "The Queen's Umbrella," from concerns about historical accuracy to the 19+ exposure scenes during the broadcast.
Cha Joo-young candidly revealed, "If we could get through the difficult early opinions, I thought people would watch the work. There were well-expressed parts and some disappointing parts. Some scenes were remade on set, and many new scenes were added in the second half. It seemed like it would be okay if we only put out what we had done, but we managed to push through many challenges."
