Netflix has published a viewing status report (Engagement Report) containing content loved by members worldwide in the second half of last year.
The Netflix viewing status report, which is an indicator showing the viewing status of its members, reveals the viewing hours and viewing counts of all productions and licensed works that have been viewed for at least 50,000 hours every six months. Netflix is enhancing transparency by releasing the top 10 weekly list, as well as a viewing status report twice a year starting in December 2023.
In the second half of 2024, Netflix's total viewing hours recorded approximately 94 billion viewing hours, a 5% increase compared to the same period last year. Notably, the global cultural impact of Korean content can also be confirmed. Since 2023, Korean content has continuously ranked first in viewing counts among non-English content. Even in the second half of last year, Korean-language content, excluding English, ranked first in viewing counts among all non-English content, demonstrating overwhelming box office power. Reflecting Netflix's philosophy of showcasing content that embodies the capabilities of local creators from various countries, non-English content from Korea, Japan, France, Colombia, and Brazil accounted for one-third of total viewing counts.
In the second half of last year, Korean content stood out in various genres, including series, films, and variety shows. First, "Squid Game" Season 2 was released just six days before the end of the year, yet it recorded about 87 million viewing counts, becoming the most-watched series of the second half. Various films, such as "Mystic Pop-up Bar" (40 million viewing counts), "The Outlaws" (24 million viewing counts), and "Cross" (23 million viewing counts), as well as "Mom's Friend's Son" (20 million viewing counts) and "Black and White Chef: Culinary Class Warfare" (17 million viewing counts), received a lot of love.
Among the works included in the report, the proportion of Korean content owned by Netflix's Intellectual Property (IP) remained the same as the previous half at less than 15%. This shows that Netflix is creating synergy by securing more Korean works and showcasing them to the global market through flexible licensing agreements with domestic partners, along with investment in Korean content.
In the previous second half, various genres, including series, films, animation, and documentaries, were beloved, reflecting the diverse preferences of members worldwide. In fact, of the top 25 films by viewing counts, 10 were animations, such as "The Grinch" (67 million viewing counts) and "Trolls Band Together" (60 million viewing counts), and documentaries dealing with true crime, such as "The Menendez Brothers" (39 million viewing counts) and "American Murder: The Laci Peterson Story" (37 million viewing counts) also recorded high viewing counts.
A Netflix representative noted, "Rather than following a standardized recipe for box office success, Netflix presents an abundant range of content to meet the diverse tastes of its members and shares daily joys. In particular, we will continue to challenge ourselves with novelty in genres and themes for Korean content, which has ranked first in viewing counts among non-English content for two consecutive years, and strive for the competitiveness of K-content and global expansion together with various partners."
