The drama 'The Witch' is rapidly gaining popularity after dominating the charts in major Southeast Asian countries within a week of its release.
On the 27th, according to the weekly chart for the third week of February (Feb. 17-23) released by Viu, Asia's largest regional OTT platform, Channel A's weekend drama 'The Witch' ranks 2nd in Indonesia and Thailand, 3rd in Malaysia, and 6th in Singapore and Hong Kong, showing a sharp upward trend.
'The Witch' depicts a mysterious romance between a woman who is ostracized from her village and bears the stigma of being a 'witch' as the men who like her are injured or killed one by one, and a man trying to save her from the law of death. Actors Park Jin-young and Noh Jung-ui play the leading roles and drive an intense narrative, drawing attention as it is also based on the webtoon of the same name by Kang Pool.
'The Witch' has achieved remarkable early success on the Viu chart. Unlike the romance genre that has been dominant in the existing K-drama market, it rapidly gained traction in international markets as a mystery thriller. In particular, the scenes from the protagonists' school days at the beginning of the drama resonate with the trending 'school uniform narrative' that has recently gained popularity in Southeast Asia, serving as a contributing factor to its success. Following 'Assembled Family' and 'Study Group', 'The Witch' has also climbed the Viu chart, marking a series of successes for K-dramas featuring school elements.
Meanwhile, Viu is a regional OTT platform operated by Hong Kong's PCCW, showcasing popular Korean content in 16 countries across Asia, the Middle East, and Africa, currently featuring various K-content, including 'Study Group', 'Please Take Care of Eagle Five', and 'Undercover High School'.
