In 'Peru Bap', Chef Choi Hyun-seok and actor Ryu Soo-young drew laughter with their harsh filming environment and discordant chemistry, which was almost like a job scam.
The SBS entertainment show 'Jungle Bap 2 - Peru Bap' (abbreviated as Peru Bap), which premiered on the 27th, depicted actors Ryu Soo-young and Chef Choi Hyun-seok challenging themselves to catch a giant squid in Peru.
Choi Hyun-seok and Ryu Soo-young, who set out early in the morning to catch a giant squid, which is said to be larger than the boat. The two, extremely tense, expected a fishing boat that would take them to the Pacific Ocean but were shocked to see the tiny boat 'Dima Pro.' They exclaimed, "The giant squid seems like it will be bigger than the boat!" along with fellow 'Peru Bap' members such as actors Kim Ok-bin, Choi Daniel, singer Dean Deen, and broadcaster Jeon Hyun-moo.
Choi Hyun-seok expressed doubt, saying, "Aren't giant squids caught in deep waters? Will this boat hold? It seems like it would flip over with just a slight wave." Nevertheless, the boat headed toward the Pacific. It turned out that the actual Dima Pro was already out at sea. They had to transfer using a small boat. Once Choi Hyun-seok boarded the real Dima Pro, he finally broke into a sigh of relief.
However, Choi Hyun-seok was nervous, saying, "This is the size of the boat that made me really seasick." Continuing to mention 'Dima Pro,' Jeon Hyun-moo made everyone laugh by saying, "Make a dish called 'Dima Pro.'" Following that, Ryu Soo-young and Choi Hyun-seok donned orange work clothes that resembled those in 'Squid Game.' Jeon Hyun-moo further added laughter by saying, "This is scarier than 'Squid Game.'"
At 2:40 a.m., the 'Giant Squid Game' finally began. As soon as the boat departed, local crew members handed over fishing hooks and bait, demanding them to start working. Ryu Soo-young stated, "This is the largest lure I have ever seen," as he attempted to adapt to the arm-thick lure. He quickly adjusted. However, Choi Hyun-seok remained stiff and struggled to adapt quickly, drawing laughter as he began to feel seasick.
Thus, Choi Hyun-seok humorously told Ryu Soo-young, who kept talking without a break, "I'm sorry, but I might not be able to respond to you for the next few hours." He also confessed to the 'Peru Bap' members, "That kind of energetic tone increased my fatigue," which added to the humor.
The atmosphere changed drastically as hand-catching of the giant squid began. It was noted that the giant squid had to be caught by hand. Choi Daniel commented, "Catching it by hand feels like a traffic accident. It just jerks the moment you get a hold of it. If catching a small fish is like that, imagine how it would be for a giant squid!" Kim Ok-bin laughed, saying, "Seeing this, we are so lucky to have arrived late." Choi Daniel echoed, "Yes, we were deployed at the right moment."
However, an hour in, there was not even a bite. Concerns arose about whether they could catch a giant squid at all. The captain comforted Choi Hyun-seok and Ryu Soo-young, saying, "If we don't catch anything soon, we should leave." The crew also stated, "Now that the sun has risen, we are not catching anything. We should go back." They even shocked everyone by saying, "You can find giant squid at the market." It was past 6:15 a.m., and after a sleepless night, Choi Hyun-seok said to the 'Peru Bap' members, who were dejected, "It was a beautiful memory," drawing laughter.
Eventually, after failing to catch a giant squid, Choi Hyun-seok, who shopped at the market with Ryu Soo-young, prepared a recipe for Vongole. He particularly made a chewy version of Vongole. He minced fresh parsley for color and texture, recreating the Vongole he had received praise for even in 'Black and White Chef.'
Meanwhile, the noise from the upper floor troubled Choi Hyun-seok. It turned out that Ryu Soo-young, who was above, was creating dishes with squid bodies and Western green onions using a double-handed chopping technique. Jeon Hyun-moo laughed, saying, "You're torturing him in various ways," and Dean Deen added to the humor by saying to the lively Ryu Soo-young, "That's 'OK-ten'" while throwing a 'palm slap.'
Ryu Soo-young challenged himself to make spicy fish cakes using the giant squid as the main ingredient along with gochujang sauce. This was a unique ingredient rarely seen in Peru or even in Korea. He also created mild-flavored fish cakes without gochujang. Thinking of his wife Park Ha-sun and daughter, he sweetly said, "If it tastes good, I will make it at home," showcasing his warm side as a caring father and loving husband. Jeon Hyun-moo was left speechless by Ryu Soo-young's quick preparation of homemade fish cakes, exclaiming, "No wonder he is not just any chef!"
After making Vongole, Choi Hyun-seok served it to Kim Ok-bin and Choi Daniel. He said, "I didn't forget the garlic," to which Kim Ok-bin replied, "You didn't forget it today," adding to the laughter. Choi Hyun-seok playfully said, "Is there a crazy chef in the world who forgets garlic in Vongole?" causing a burst of laughter around as he referred to his own moment of forgetting garlic while making Vongole on 'Black and White Chef.'
On the other hand, Ryu Soo-young served food directly to Choi Hyun-seok. Choi Hyun-seok hesitated, saying, "This is a plate I haven't washed," and Ryu Soo-young insisted, "It's okay," encouraging him to eat. Choi Hyun-seok joked, "You seem to match my rhythm but we are not on the same wave length," making everyone laugh.
In contrast, Ryu Soo-young tasted the squid frying sauce made by Choi Hyun-seok and could not find words, showing admiration as if he were conducting a performance. He eventually said, "To say I'm going to Peru just to eat squid fries doesn't even make sense," which drew laughter as people responded, "He is not just any chef, he is an 'OK-ten' teacher! That makes no sense!"
