Actor Son Ho-jun has chosen the theater stage.
The production team of the play "Angels in America" announced on the 25th, "Son Ho-jun will join as Prior Walter, a white gay Namsung who is in a romantic relationship with Lewis Ironson and is living with AIDS. Son Ho-jun is expected to showcase a variety of emotional performances as a sexual minority character trapped in extreme situations among supernatural elements."
This marks his return to the stage after a decade. Son Ho-jun has chosen the theater stage for the first time in 10 years since the musical "Joseph Amazing." This production had previously announced a luxurious cast that includes Yoo Seung-ho as Prior Walter, Go Joon-hee and Jung Hye-in as Harper Pitt, Lee Tae-bin and Jung Kyung-hoon as Lewis Ironson, Lee Yoo-jin and Yang Ji-won as Joseph Pitt, Lee Hyo-jung and Kim Joo-ho as Roy Cohn, and Tae Hang-ho and Min Jin-woong as Belize.
Son Ho-jun, who will stand shoulder to shoulder with these actors, stated, "I have once again felt the fun of acting. Sharing thoughts with the actors and the process of analyzing and creating together is very enjoyable and fun. Listening to the opinions of actors who interpret differently than I do and exchanging stories allows me to open up my previously confined thoughts, and I feel I am learning and growing a lot through that process."
For Son Ho-jun, choosing to return to theater after the collapse of his agency aimed to seek authenticity in acting once again. His former agency, Think Entertainment, faced collapse after its top artist Kim Ho-jung became involved in a drunk driving and hit-and-run scandal, leading to both the CEO and the Deputy Minister being arrested. Ultimately, on the 27th of last month, they began procedures for effectively closing down, with all employees resigning and changes to the CEO position.
In addition to Kim Ho-jung, Think Entertainment included not only Son Ho-jun but also actors like Kim Kwang-kyu, singers such as Hong Ji-yoon, Young-ki, Jung Da-kyung, Kang Ye-seul, Geum Jan-di, and comedian Heo Kyung-hwan. An official noted on the 4th, "All contracts for artists, including Son Ho-jun, are approaching termination or expiration. In Son Ho-jun's case, his exclusive contract ends by the end of this month, and he will not be renewing it afterward."
Son Ho-jun is expected to soar on the theater stage. He expressed, "It's still early in rehearsals, but I'm having so much fun and beneficial time. Everyone is practicing joyously together, so I ask for your great expectations."
Meanwhile, "Angels in America" deals with various themes such as divinity, the essence of humanity, political corruption, love, and betrayal against the backdrop of the United States in the 1980s. With a narrative that intertwines reality and fantasy, it dramatically expresses the discrimination experienced by social minorities, gaining public sympathy and winning accolades like the Pulitzer Prize, Tony Award, and Drama Desk Award.
It will be performed from August 6 to September 28 at LG Arts Center in Seoul, LG SIGNATURE Hall.
