The wife of Kim Tae-won from Resurrection, Lee Hyun-joo, expressed her struggles while taking care of the family alone.
In the episode of TV Chosun's 'Lovestruck in Joseon' aired on the 24th, the couple Kim Tae-won and Lee Hyun-joo was depicted enjoying a rare date together.
Kim Tae-won and Lee Hyun-joo first met in high school in 1984 and married after a nine-year relationship, having a daughter, Seo-hyun, and a son, Woo-hyun. However, following their son Woo-hyun's diagnosis on the autism spectrum, Lee Hyun-joo went to the Philippines, where developmental disability programs are well established, to raise their two children alone.
Lee Hyun-joo recalled, "I left for the Philippines because I was struggling after having my son. I often think about how I lived through those long years, and I felt a lot of resentment towards Kim Tae-won for not being able to do what other fathers do for their children."
Having returned to Korea after 20 years with her son's graduation, Lee Hyun-joo is currently living with Kim Tae-won. In the meantime, Kim Tae-won enjoyed a rare date with Lee Hyun-joo.
During this time, Kim Tae-won cautiously broached the subject, saying, "Have you talked to Seo-hyun about marriage? Are you still discussing it? Make a decision quickly about whether we should go to New York or if Seo-hyun will come to Korea." Kim Tae-won wants his daughter, who is about to marry her American boyfriend, to have a wedding not only in the U.S. but also in Korea, and the daughter stated that if she can persuade her mother, she would hold the wedding in Korea.
In response, Lee Hyun-joo said, "We need to discuss it a bit more," and held back her words. Kim Tae-won questioned, "Didn't you say you absolutely hated having a wedding in Korea at first? Why is that? Is it too hard?" Lee Hyun-joo candidly revealed, "The 'Three Kims' have tormented me. Kim Seo-hyun, Kim Woo-hyun, and Kim Tae-won, that's the 'Three Kims.'"
Kim Tae-won asked, "What has been the most challenging part of your life since you've been with me?" Lee Hyun-joo replied, "For me, it's primarily that I didn't take care of my health. The alcohol-related issues (liver shock and stomach cancer) are something I'm well aware of. So why do you have a nonchalant attitude about it?"
She continued, "Seo-hyun is the same. Seo-hyun had severe depression. Woo-hyun has been struggling since he was born with other challenges. Woo-hyun is a continuing challenge, and even Kim Tae-won is a continuing challenge. But Seo-hyun has improved a lot."
In response, Kim Tae-won reflected, "The time when I hated Seo-hyun the most was when she couldn't understand you. When I was busy and couldn't go to the Philippines, occasionally when I did, from my perspective, Seo-hyun was not the 10-year-old girl that I used to take around as my daughter anymore."
Lee Hyun-joo said, "It was a really difficult time during her middle school years," and Kim Tae-won added, "Looking back now, it was depression, but at that time, I didn't know. Seeing you act out made me angry. When I was thinking about what was hard in the family, what parts were broken, and what needed to be fixed, and seeing you act out, it made me furious. That was how I felt then. Your mother is someone who is already struggling. What were you thinking doing that?"
Upon this, Lee Hyun-joo revealed, "I pushed Seo-hyun away a lot when Woo-hyun was a baby. I didn't hold her enough." Kim Tae-won remarked, "She used to want to be held, and now it's not the same, right?" Lee Hyun-joo tearfully concluded, "Now Seo-hyun understands everything. Talking about Seo-hyun makes me cry."
