The sudden death of Taiwanese actress Hsu Shi-yuan, who was married to singer Koo Jun-yup, has brought inheritance and custody issues to the forefront in Taiwan. Hsu's estate is estimated to be worth 600 million yuan, approximately 120 billion won.
On the 4th, local media in Taiwan, including Dongsen Broadcasting Corporation (ETTV), estimated that Hsu Shi-yuan's estate is about 600 million yuan, and it was speculated that her two daughters from her ex-husband and her current husband, Koo Jun-yup, could each receive one-third.
Hsu Shi-yuan was estimated to own land for the National Gallery of Modern Art and a penthouse, with real estate assets alone amounting to around 25 billion won. Additionally, Hsu's annual income was reported to be at least 80 million New Taiwan dollars (about 3.5448 billion won).
In particular, Koo Jun-yup and Hsu Shi-yuan were known to have been legally married in both Korea and Taiwan. Local media reported that the two registered their marriage in Korea on Feb. 8, 2023, and in Taiwan on Mar. 28 of the same year.
As a result, there are speculations that Koo Jun-yup could claim half of the inheritance. However, ETTV quoted a local lawyer stating, "Considering the timing of the marriage registration, it might not be easy due to the short duration of the marriage."
Previously, Hsu Shi-yuan married Chinese businessman Wang Shao-fei in 2011. She gave birth to a daughter in 2014 and a son in 2016, but the couple divorced in 2021 after 10 years of marriage. Hsu met Koo Jun-yup in 1998, and they dated for about a year before reuniting and marrying 23 years later.
It is speculated that custody of Hsu Shi-yuan's underage children could go to Wang Shao-fei, as Koo Jun-yup has not yet adopted the children. Hsu's biological mother could take all the children, but it was reported that the consent of their biological father, Wang Shao-fei, would be needed.
Meanwhile, Hsu Shi-yuan passed away on the 2nd from influenza complicated by pneumonia during a trip to Japan. After completing the cremation process in Japan, Koo Jun-yup and Hsu Shi-yuan's family are scheduled to return to Taiwan with the urn on the 6th.
