Hanjin Logistics, a member of the group TWS, referred to kimchi as Chinese paocai and then deleted the post.
According to Professor Seogyeongdeok of Sungshin Women's University on the 5th, Hanjin wrote in Korean on the global community platform Weverse, "I had kimchi stew" on the 1st, and referred to it as paocai in Chinese.
Paocai is a food made by pickling cabbage, mustard stems, peppers, carrots, and other ingredients in salt, which is different from kimchi, a product made by fermenting cabbage mixed with seasonings made from red pepper powder, garlic, ginger, and green onions.
Professor Seog noted on his social media service (SNS) that he received "a lot of reports on the same issue," along with an image capturing Hanjin's Weverse post, saying, "This is a serious mistake."
Professor Seog continued, "As a star with significant external influence, they should have been more cautious and understood the basic sentiments of Koreans," emphasizing that "kimchi and paocai are different foods."
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism revised the guidelines for the foreign translation and notation of public terms in 2021, specifying the correct Chinese notation for kimchi as "xin chi" (辛奇).
Hanjin deleted the post after continued criticisms from Korean fans.
