Singer Gu Jun-yeob's wife, Taiwanese actress Seohui-won (Hsu Shi-yuan), suddenly passed away on the 2nd. While it is known that acute pneumonia caused by the flu was the cause, claims have been raised that she died from sepsis, not pneumonia.
Local Taiwanese media, Yiping News, reported that the cause of her death is likely sepsis. Her condition rapidly deteriorated after being diagnosed with the flu while traveling in Japan with her family on the 31st of last month, leading to her passing three days later on the 2nd.
Yiping News quoted Dr. Du Cheng-zhe, a Taiwanese cardiothoracic surgeon, stating, 'She was urgently transported to the hospital but passed away before receiving extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO),' adding that 'it is highly likely that pneumonia led to sepsis.'
Sepsis is defined as life-threatening organ dysfunction caused by an abnormal host response to infection. It can lead to death if appropriate treatment is not administered, and the mortality rate is very high when accompanied by organ dysfunction or shock.
Yiping News added, 'There is a very high possibility of septic shock occurring due to insufficient blood oxygen levels or inadequate blood pressure worsening the pneumonia. It is not at all surprising that pneumonia can lead to sepsis.'
Earlier, on the 3rd, the Central News Agency (CNA) and others reported that she passed away from pneumonia caused by the flu while traveling in Japan. Currently, Gu is holding his wife Seohui-won's funeral in Japan and plans to transfer her ashes to Taiwan after cremation.
