The National Museum of Korea ranked third worldwide in museum visitor numbers.
According to the National Museum of Korea on the 1st, in last year's museum visitor survey released by the British art outlet "The Art Newspaper," the National Museum of Korea ranked third worldwide with 6,507,483 annual visitors.
In this survey, the Louvre Museum topped the list with 9,046,000 visitors, and the Vatican Museums ranked second with 6,933,822. The National Museum of Korea took third place, ahead of major museums worldwide including the British Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
The Art Newspaper said, "The most dazzling growth appeared in Korea," adding, "The National Museum of Korea saw visitors surge by more than 70% year over year, which ranks among the top cases we have observed in terms of absolute growth."
Among domestic museums, the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art ranked 35th, with 2.1 million visitors to its Seoul venue, up 28% from a year earlier. Gyeongju National Museum ranked 39th, the Buyeo National Museum 78th, and the Gongju National Museum 89th.
The National Museum of Korea's visitor growth is continuing this year as well. In the first quarter, the museum's total visitors reached 2,023,888, up 44.8% from the same period a year earlier.
