Actor Jang Dong-jik, 59, was appointed chair of the National Jeongdong Theater. Jang publicly supported then-Democratic Party of Korea candidate Lee Jae-myung in the 2022 presidential election.
According to the performing arts community on the 20th, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism delivered a letter of appointment to Jang, the new chair, on the 12th. The term is three years, until Feb. 11, 2029.
Jeongdong Theater is a foundation under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MCST), established in 1995 to promote performing arts. It creates and distributes performances across diverse genres, discovers works with strong growth potential, and develops and supports them into high-quality productions. The chair is a part-time position and oversees the Jeongdong Theater board of directors.
After debuting in 1995 with the film Runaway, Jang appeared in the films Gwichundo and Beat, and the drama Age of Warriors, Age of Ambition, War of Money, Empress Cheonchu, and Iris.
Jeong Seong-suk, CEO of Jeongdong Theater, saw the term expire in November last year. However, because the selection of a successor has been delayed, the CEO continues to serve.
