As applications for the 6,000 won discount tickets for theaters distributed by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korean Film Council surged, access to major cinema websites and apps was disrupted on the 25th.
On that morning, the official websites of multiplex cinemas such as CGV, Lotte Cinema, Megabox, and Cinecube experienced delays or were completely inaccessible. Some websites displayed messages indicating that the number of waiting users exceeded 100,000, along with projected wait times of more than 14 hours.
The situation is similar for the mobile app. When an access attempt is made, a message appears stating, "Currently unavailable due to a system error," making normal use impossible.
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and KOFIC announced that they would distribute a total of 4.5 million 6,000 won discount tickets starting at 10 a.m. that day, leading to a surge of users all at once. These discount tickets can be obtained from the websites and apps of multiplex cinemas and can be used without any day restrictions until September 2.
Other discounts, such as "Culture Day," can be applied simultaneously. When applying this discount to "Culture Day," which allows people to watch movies for 7,000 won on the last Wednesday of each month, tickets can be purchased for just 1,000 won.
