Renowned American actor Robert De Niro (82) will receive this year's Honorary Golden Palm at the Cannes Film Festival.
The Cannes Film Festival announced on its official website on the 8th (local time) that Robert De Niro has been selected as the recipient of the Honorary Golden Palm for the 78th Cannes Film Festival. The award ceremony will be held during the opening ceremony on the 13th of next month.
The Cannes Film Festival praised De Niro, saying, "Through performances that emerge from his inner self, he has become a legendary figure for film fans around the world with just a smile or a piercing gaze."
De Niro said, "At a time when the world is dividing us, the Cannes Film Festival brings us together," adding, "It feels like coming home."
De Niro, who made his debut in Brian De Palma's "Greetings" (1968), gained prominence in the American film industry by starring in his close friend Martin Scorsese's breakout film "Mean Streets" (1973).
He continued to star in films such as "Taxi Driver" (1976), "New York, New York" (1977), "Raging Bull" (1980), "Once Upon a Time in America" (1984), and "Goodfellas" (1990), actively working as Scorsese's persona. Even in his later years, he has shown an unquenchable passion for acting in films like "The Irishman" (2019) and "Flower Killing Moon" (2023).
He has consistently worked with other directors, appearing in "Lend 2" (1974, directed by Francis Ford Coppola), "The Mission" (1986, directed by Roland Joffé), "CAPE Fear" (1991, directed by J. Lee Thompson), "Heat" (1995, directed by Michael Mann), "The Intern" (2015, directed by Nancy Meyers), and "Joker" (2019, directed by Todd Phillips).
De Niro has a deep connection with the Cannes Film Festival. His starring films "Taxi Driver" and "The Mission" both received the prestigious Golden Palm, and in 2011, he served as the jury chair.
The Honorary Golden Palm he is receiving is a special award given to filmmakers who have made significant contributions to the global film industry.
In recent years, Hollywood actors such as Jodie Foster, Tom Cruise, Harrison Ford, and Meryl Streep have received this award.
