Actress Lee Young-ae returns to the stage after 32 years.
According to LG Art Center on the 25th, Lee Young-ae will play the character 'Hedda,' known as the female Hamlet, in the new production of 'Hedda Gabler,' presented to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the center.
In this production, all actors, including Lee Young-ae, will grant performances as one cast from May 7 to June 8 at LG Signature Hall.
Based on Henrik Ibsen's original work, 'Hedda Gabler' deals with the psychology of a woman yearning for freedom amidst social constraints and oppression. The protagonist, Hedda, appears elegant on the outside but is a complex character with hidden anxiety, desire, and destructive nature.
Along with Lee Young-ae, Kim Jung-ho plays the role of Hedda's husband 'Tesman,' who is only interested in academic achievements, and Ji Hyun-jun plays the judge 'Brack,' who continually exerts psychological pressure on Hedda. Lee Seung-ju takes on the role of her former lover 'Lovborg,' who awakens Hedda's dormant desires, and Baek Ji-won plays the friend 'Thea,' who stirs Hedda's jealousy. Lee Jung-mi is cast as the traditional aunt 'Tesman,' and Jo Eun-hee plays Hedda's maid 'Berthe.'
This production is an adaptation by Richard Eyre, who won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Revival in 2006.
The direction will be handled by Jeon In-cheol, the recipient of the directing award at the 54th Dong-A Theater Awards, known as a 'master of meticulous text analysis.' Jeon has been praised for uniquely addressing contemporary issues in works such as 'Kyrie,' 'I Am a Murderer,' and 'Women of the Ground.'
This performance aims to reflect our complex psyche and anxieties of living in modern society and to sharply portray the recurring conflicts within the social structure through surrounding characters.
The first ticket sales will begin at 2 p.m. on March 7.
